What is a Dust Filter Bag?

According to the NIOSH Dust Control Handbook, filter bags are a core component of baghouse dust collectors, functioning by forcing or drawing dust-laden air through filter media that traps particles while allowing clean air to pass through.

Dust filter bags are typically made from woven or nonwoven technical fabrics, offering resistance to heat, chemicals, moisture, and even fire. They are essential in industries that generate fine, hazardous, or combustible dust.

Baghouse Dust Filtration System

• Filter Housing: The filter housing is the chamber where filter bags are installed and where dust-laden air flows through for filtration.
• Filter Bags: Made from technical fabrics such as polyester, aramid, or PTFE, the filter bags are designed to capture fine dust particles while allowing air to pass through the fabric.
• Cleaning Mechanisms for Filter Bags: To maintain filtration efficiency, several cleaning methods are applied:
  – Mechanical shaking: Vibrates the bags to dislodge dust (used when compressed air is unavailable).
  – Pulse jet air: Blasts compressed air into the bag interior to shake off dust.
  – Reverse air: Uses low-pressure clean air blown in reverse to inflate the bag and release dust.

External Surface Filtration

– These filter bags have their outer surface exposed to the dust-laden airflow. Depending on the application, the surface may be treated to resist: Moisture and oil, abrasive dust, toxic gases, fine particulate matter, electrostatic dust, spark-laden ash,…
– Clean air passes through the outer surface into the bag interior and exits via the clean air outlet. Dust accumulates on the outer surface and is removed by gravity, assisted by an automatic pulse-jet cleaning system.
– Bags are cylindrical, typically 1 to 7 meters long, sealed by stitching or adhesive on automated production lines. The bag opening is secured with steel rings or drawstrings.
– Inside each bag is a steel support cage to maintain shape and prevent collapse under suction pressure.
– These filters are usually installed in airtight housings.

Internal Surface Filtration

– In this configuration, the dust is captured on the inner surface of the bag. Clean air passes through the treated surface and is released into the surrounding environment, while dust falls down by gravity.
– During filtration, the bag inflates continuously. If using hanging-type bags, no internal support cage is needed; instead, the bags are suspended from a frame.
– These filters are typically installed in open-frame structures.
