What is a Filter Cartridge?
Filter Cartridge is a cylindrical filter, specially designed for liquid and gas filtration technology. It has the function of processing and removing particles, dirt, impurities and pollution. Currently, the filter Cartridge is considered one of the popular dust filtering devices, with a filtering efficiency of up to 98%.
Regarding the operating principle of the system, the centrifugal fan creates negative pressure suction force to push dust through the duct system into the filter chamber. Here, coarse and heavy dust will fall into the funnel for collection, while the suspended dust and fine dust are retained on the surface of the pleated cartridges of the filter Cartridge, while the air flow passing through the filters becomes clean gas and escapes.
Structure of Filter Cartridge
The components that make up a typical cartridge filter set include:
- Top cap: made of galvanized metal, SUS304, plastic, …
- Bottom cap: made of galvanized metal, stainless steel, plastic, etc.
- Pleated filter material (filter media): Spunbond Polyester, Cellulose/Polyester blend. The material can be blended with antistatic fibers for dusts that are potentially explosive.
- Inner construction mesh: made of plastic, galvanized steel in the form of perforated panels, latticework, etc.
- Accessories: Rubber gasket, outer mesh, cover bands, connection bolts,…
Cartridge filters mostly have a cylindrical body structure, the top and bottom are also cylindrical, inside there is a steel mesh frame to strengthen the shape of the cylindrical tube. In addition, depending on the requirements, there are many other designs:
- About the shape: Cylindrical or oval from top to bottom, or conical with the bottom diameter of the tube smaller than the top of the tube.
- Top: Usually a flange or cap type with a rubber gasket on top or a rubber ring below to help seal the tube mouth after being tightly installed on the hole plate. For convenience in maintenance and replacement, there is an additional top structure with a quick coupling + gasket, or screw thread + gasket.
- Body: Because there is only 1 layer of pleated filter media, the filter tube usually has a mesh layer inside to help withstand the force and shape the filter tube. In addition, depending on the conditions of use, the filter tube can have an additional protective mesh layer on the outside to cover the filter surface. The mesh types can be found in the form of twisted mesh or perforated mesh with a number of different hole shapes (round, diamond).
- Bottom: The single tube type will have a closed bottom, depending on the design if bolts are needed, there will be an additional hole at the bottom of the tube. The open bottom tube type is used to connect to another tube to increase the length.

Advantages of Filter Cartridge
- High filtration efficiency: The filter Cartridge is capable of cleaning up to 98% of dust, with outstanding efficiency of ~99.95% for dust particles sized 0.5 μm ÷ 1 μm.
- Easy to clean: Most use low pressure compressed air to clean the dust on the filter surface. Can be removed with a vacuum cleaner and a soft brush to remove dust and debris stuck in the folds. Depending on the type of treated Polyester filter material, it can be cleaned with water to clean the dust on the surface, and after drying, it can be used again. Note that for filters used to filter fine dust, as well as if the filter material contains cellulose fibers, do not clean with water but must be replaced after a cycle of use.
- Easy to replace: Replacing a new cartridge filter is very quick, saving time and effort compared to a filter with a cloth bag. Filter tubes with a joint connector are even easier to replace.
- Compact design: Cartridge filters with many folds should have a total filter surface area 3-7 times larger than a conventional cloth filter bag, compact design suitable for limited space and flexible in installation and maintenance.
- High product durability: Thanks to components such as: Filter core made of high-durability material with effective cleaning capabilities; Support frame made of sturdy, rust-resistant perforated metal plates, especially in spiral form for increased rigidity and vibration resistance; Airtight gaskets and a robust lid construction to prevent air leakage. Synchronized designs such as PU top and bottom also provide higher durability and reliability.
- Reasonable cost: Cost is a decisive factor in investment efficiency/cost. High-standard products offer competitive pricing when compared to high quality and high filtration efficiency, high differential pressure resistance, stability and durability, measurability and evaluation, ensuring they meet the specific design requirements of the cartridge dust filter system.
- Cost savings in operation: The efficient automatic cleaning cycle using compressed air pulses quickly restores air permeability and ensures the airflow meets the design specifications of the dust filter system, preventing dust buildup that causes clogging, saving labor and operating costs, and reducing compressed air consumption.
- Wide application: Cartridge dust filters are commonly used in many industries such as cement, metallurgy, food, tobacco, paper, chemicals, dry powder coating, and textiles.
Disadvantages of Filter Cartridge
- Cartridge filter dust collection systems require a higher initial investment compared to systems using fabric filter bags. The return on investment/cost is determined by the project’s lifecycle and the ability to upgrade according to new environmental standards.
- For systems with continuously high dust loads, this can be overcome by combining it with a pre-filtration system such as a cyclone dust collection system or a fabric bag dust collection system to minimize coarse dust and reduce the amount of dust entering the subsequent cartridge filter system.
- An efficient dust shaking system is needed, suitable for highly adhesive dust.
