Many years ago, when passing by a cement factory, we often saw the characteristic gray dust rising and spreading around its operating area… This article provides a basic perspective on cement dust pollution and related dust filtration solutions.
Hazards from cement dust pollution
- For the natural environment inside and outside the factory, dust that hangs on trees and natural plants will prevent their pre-photosynthesizing.
- Both humans and animals breathing cement dust and fine form dust (PM2.5 – particle size less than 3μm) suspended in the exhaust gas, are susceptible to respiratory diseases and lung diseases which are dangerous in the cement industry.
- Dust spreads very far by the wind, covers the sediment, pollutes the ground and water sources, and even damages the soil, degrading the flora.
Efforts to reduce cement dust
Over the past 10 years, with efforts to reduce environmental pollution, and change to dry rotary kiln cement production technology, dust at cement factories has decreased a lot, even close to zero. They fully owe to investment in efficient dust treatment systems, and safe, hygienic, and risk prevention production measures.
Cement production process
The typical cement production process can be summarized in 3 main stages:
- Raw materials (inputs).
- Clinker (the main component of cement).
- Some kinds of finished cement.
Observing each process, there are more detailed stages, from the mining area to the process of threshing, sieving, coarse grinding, extraction of raw materials and additives (limestone, clay, shale, fly ash, steel flakes, bauxite ore, gypsum,…), then creates calcium, silicon, iron and aluminum, the process of importing storage, Clinker crushing, clinker smelting, clinker cooling and grinding, dry wholesale grinding, clinker loading, cement storage and additive mixing, bagging of cement finished products, bag loading, transport vehicles,… All such stages are capable of spreading soil dust, cement dust, gypsum dust, additives and harmful substances, emissions, and energy consumption.
Cement dust treatment methods
In each cement production process and stage should have a system of dust and gas collection, as well as energy-circulating heat, … The coordinated methods of material dust handling can be customized, including:
- Dry dust filtration: a preliminary treatment method, through gravity deposition, inertia, and centrifugal rotation.
- Cyclone: large dust collection (particle size >5μm), in cyclone under the action of centrifugal force pushing the vortex gas flow.
- Fabric bags filtration: using a dust filter system through fabric bags with a pneumatic vibration device and mechanism, filter small dust and fine dust (>2.5μm) with high dust filtration efficiency (98 – 99%).
- Electrostatic filtration: collecting dust by electric field force, dust settles on the electrode surface, finally with vibration treatment. Dust particle size is as small as 0.1μm with very high collection efficiency, subject to exhaust gas temperatures as high as 500°C.
- Cartridge filter: using specialized filters to filter cement dust, antistatic and fireproof, shake dust with compressed air pulses, and collect nearly 99% of the dust.
